Typically, swimming pools should have a pH of approximately 7.3 to 7.6. Anything below or above this range is often considered an abnormal pool pH. At times, pools become alkaline due to several factors. Therefore, pool owners should constantly check and balance their water chemistry. This way, they’ll keep their pools in perfect shape. Let’s take a look at how you can lower pool alkalinity.
First, check the pH of your pool. Use a test kit to do this. There are many test kits that can help you determine the pool’s exact pH and total alkalinity. Doing this helps you know the best way to restore the pool to its neutral state.
Create a realistic target value. From there, you’ll determine the correct quantity of acid to use for your pool. Your target value should vary from around 80 ppm to 100 ppm.
After you identify the exact amount of muriatic acid to lower pool alkalinity, dilute it with water. Muriatic acid is powerful and corrosive. Thus, you have to dilute it before adding it into the pool. Then, take the solution and gradually pour it across the pool. Make sure the pump is on as you do this. More often than not, 2 quarts of muriatic acid is enough for a 20000-gallon pool.
Once you pour the solution into the water, leave it for about 6 hours. Then, use a test strip to check the pH and TA of the pool. Doing this will help you know if you are on the right track.
Conduct another test after 24 hours. At this point, your pH should be okay. It should range between 7.3 to 7.6. If the pH of the pool is not low, consider repeating the process. Your TA should also range from 80 ppm to 100 ppm. You can also take the test after 48 hours to make sure everything is okay.
When your pool’s pH is high, you can lower it using muriatic acid. First, however, it is essential to follow the right steps to reduce your pool’s alkalinity. Otherwise, you won’t achieve your desired outcome.
