Fall of 2020. Looked for pool service for weekly servicing plus power wash. acid wash the pool and seal pavers with WET LOOK on driveway, path to front porch and pavers on back patio. Owner even responded that he agreed with the ‘Wet Look. He said without it, the project would appear that we had nothing done. He responded that he knew exactly what we wanted. The acid wash of the pool was performed by a sub-contractor who did his part successfully.

We didn’t know anything about a reputable company to hire. We asked for suggestions from our pool supply company. There was a calling card on the counter which we took home. We called the company to give us a quote. At the that time we also contacted Neighborhood Digest asking if anyone had experience with this company named Cole’sPool Service. We received one good recommendation response and all the rest were negative. I pointed this out to Cool’s and he had a reason for. everything we questioned. At the time they seemed to be logical.

The next day a VERY nice man came to the house from Cole’s. He gave us a quote of $4,300.00. We told him we would think about it and get back with him. Before he left he told us that from talking with us that he could tell that we had had some bad experiences with contractors (which indeed we had, and had or home go through two floods. He said he guaranteed in this case this would not happen. Like I said this was a VERY NICE MAN. He then told us that he was so sure that we would be happy with his service that he didn’t want any fees till the job was done the way we liked it and if we weren’t happy, we owed him nothing. So what have we got to loose? Right?

We are both close in our mid 70’s and moved to Florida to retire, play some golf and relax after many years of hard work. So, we hired Cole’s Pool Service. We thought we would be added to a waiting list but also surprised when he said he would start the following week.

The following week a small crew arrived, 2 were his sons which proceeded to move furnishings aside in preparation. We have very heavy outside furniture and at our age there would have been no way we could have done this ourselves, no children to help, and we know no-one to help us. NICE MAN OFFERED TO DO THIS FOR US.

After a week they announced they were finished. Our first question was why there was no WET LOOK? His response was that he had told us that if we didn’t like it, we owed him nothing. This was fine except that to get what we wanted we would again have to hire another contractor. The second thing we noticed was that the sand was not staying in between the pavers. Our dog was tracking in this sand getting it everywhere in the house. The furniture had sand imbedded in the fabric and since our dog sleeps with us, the sand was in the bed requiring us to change sheets every morning and then the sand moving to the washing machine. Additionally, weeds came back with a vengeance between the pavers where the sand was came out.

After seeing the problems, we spoke with him, and he said “I told you I would redo it and just give me a few weeks.” After several weeks went by and not hearing back from him, we spoke to his son, whom we hired to do the weekly pool maintenance. He said my dad said he would redo it and he will. We continued to place calls and received no response for several more months and continued giving the son money for the pool maintenance.

After several more months, contact was made and his reason was that he didn’t have the money for new supplies to redo the job since we hadn’t paid him. We wanted this to be done and over with so we paid him the $4300.00 he requested. We asked him what product he had used originally. With this information we called the representative of the product telling him what had happened also sending pictures. I also told him not to worry that the contractor had promised to redo it. The rep was in Orlando but told us to let him know when the contractor was ready to redo, and he was nice enough to offer guidance. We also learned that the sealer was done incorrectly. I was on site the whole time so I knew this sealer was mixed on a 5 to 1 ratio. The rep said mixing like this was to watered down it should have been done 3 to 1.

We conveyed this to Cole’s Service and he said he was going to use a different product this time because he didn’t like what he had originally used. He was going to buy this from a friend. I asked the name of this sealer and his reply was that the sealer was named ‘WET’. I said that’s all? Just WET? Yes, he said just WET. I immediately looked on line for this product, but have found nothing or anyone that has ever heard of this sealer.

After another month went by, we got hold of the contractor. This time his excuse was that he meant to follow through with his plans but due to his bad memory he had forgotten. He hadn’t picked up the WET SEALER yet. We finally told him that we would buy the sealer again if he would just provide the sand and the services as we knew at our age and the poor health we were in, that we couldn’t do this ourselves. He agreed that he would provide this service.

Another month went by before we got hold of him and this time, he said to give him some more time as he had fired his whole crew and needed time to find more workers to hire.

Meanwhile we were still paying the son for the weekly pool care. WHY?? He was a nice person too. After he missed 3 weeks, the pool was turning green. We contacted him and left messages, with no response. Finally, we figured out that he was not returning. We had a good repour with him, and really liked the son. He was always paid on time so we don’t know what happened We ended up going to the pool store and had to use many chemicals over a week to get the pool back to normal. It took almost an hour to get the pool filter completely clean.

One time one of his workers told me he didn’t have money for the weekend because he hadn’t been paid. I gave him $30.00 from my wallet. We tried to keep a good repour with this company.

One other item related to this project has also not been corrected. As part of the pool cleanup, the contractor replaced the box that monitors the chemical levels in the pool. Well, the box has never functioned properly and gives false readings. Early on, the contractor stated he needed to replace a part in the box to have it function properly. As with everything else, he kept promising to replace the part, and to this day, it has not been replaced.
